Italian and Albania Leaders Express Support for Corridor VIII

(10/9/2006)  Yesterday morning Prime Minister Sali Berisha held a meeting with the Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi before the opening ceremony of the 70th edition of the Fiera del Levante in Bari.  During this meeting both Prime Ministers underlined the excellent relations existing between the two countries in every field and expressed their commitment and determination to strengthen the collaboration between the two nations.

One of the most important issues discussed during this meeting was Corridor 8. Prime Minister Prodi pointed out the importance of this Corridor for the Albanian integration in the European Community, highlighting the fact that it can transform Albania in one of the Balkans’ most important gates. He also mentioned the economic importance of this Corridor for Italy, even though it is not a part of it.

Prime Minister Berisha also mentioned the important role that Italy can play in promoting and encouraging European infrastructure projects in Albania as well as in the Balkans. He also introduced his counterpart to the reforms and achievements of his government in the fight against organized crime and corruption without forgetting the efforts for the improvement of the business environment.

At the end of the meeting Mr. Berisha invited the Italian Prime Minister on an official visit to Albania, which he immediately accepted, adding that the two Prime Ministers will frequently meet in the future. (Albanian Government news release)
